SoCal Firestorm - Oct 2003

October 2003 turned out to have the worst wildfires ever in California. When the fires started, we were in the midst of a record setting heat wave. The closest one was a good 30+ miles away. As the days wore on, the fires got larger and larger, but even further away from us. Unfortunately, the winds blew everything right over Orange County. Our yard, pool, etc. were covered in fine ash. It looked like it was snowing it was so heavy. On Saturday it was so dark outside we needed lights on in the house all day. It was like dusk, all day long. The sky was full of smoke and ash and it was impossible to get away from the smell of smoke. This lasted for about five full days. The smokey smell permeated the house, everything.

The mess that is our pool.

It's so dark and smokey outside, you can look straight at the sun.
This is the middle of an otherwise cloudless day, and we're more than 40 miles from the fire!

Ash covering our driveway. The picture has a yellow tinge. That's not the picture.
The sky, the outside world was this yucky yellow tinge for several days.
